Glenn Jampol – Chair at Global Ecotourism Network

GLENN JAMPOL is a pioneer in Costa Rica and for the last 30 years has been the owner and developer of two award winning 5 level certified sustainable hotels in Costa Rica.

Mr. Jampol is also a farmer and purveyor of single origin estate coffee producing yearly 12,000 kilos of award winning shade grown organic coffee.

He worked for Costa Rica National Ecotourism Association (CANAECO), Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT), he was the vice president of National Accreditation Commission (CNA) and he has also worked as a consultant on national and global sustainability policy of tourism for the Republic of Costa Rica.

Mr. Jampol is currently the Chair of the newly formed Global Ecotourism Network (GEN) – comprised of all the ex-Directors of the TIES Advisory Board who in 2015 formed this new global organization representing global sustainable tourism and ecotourism.

Masaru Takayama – Founding Chair, Asian Ecotourism Network.

Mr. Masaru Takayama founded Japan Ecolodge Association (ECOLA), to promote ecotourism and ecolodge uniting responsible tourism and green buildings in Japan. The environmentally-friendly accommodations standard developed by ECOLA is fully recognized by Global Sustainable Tourism Council to bottom up the industry standards in the Japanese marketplace. He is president of travel agency ‘Spirit of Japan Travel’ in Kyoto.

Alex Crevar – Travel Journalist and Editor.

He is writer wand editor. He has reported travel stories as a regular contributor for publications such as The New York Times, National Geographic Travel, and Lonely Planet magazine for more than 20 years. He also regularly advises tourism organizations in the development of best practices. As well as serving as a guest lecturer at universities, Crevar teaches pro bono travel journalism workshops in countries around the world with writers in developing tourism markets. 

Bogdan Papuc – Executive Director

Bogdan Papuc is director of Romanian Ecotourism Association. The association has
achieved a partnership for nature conservation and tourism development among
tourism associations, non-governmental associations acting in local development
and nature conservation, nature conservation projects and travel agencies.
Bogdan was tourism consultant, marketing and communication officer.

Dominika ZarebaWriter, journalist, ecotourism specialist, traveler

Author of Poland’s first book dedicated to ecotourism (“Ekoturystyka”, PWN, 3rd ed. 2010). Writer, freelance columnist and traveler, author of tourist guides and books. Co-founder of the Bezdroża Publishing House. She laid the foundations for the greenways program in Poland and initiated creation of greenway networks across Central and Eastern Europe. She is active with many environmental NGOs and ecotourism networks in Europe and world-wide.


Maja Campelj

After master’s degree in marketing and communication Maja is now involved in postgraduate studies of Responsible Tourism Management at Leeds Beckett University in UK, where she is exploring the ways to implement the academic sustainability criteria in everyday tourist experiences on the destination. She is also WFTGA accredited tourist guide trainer and she empowers guides to be cultural connectors, sustainability communicators, unforgettable experience creators, educators and ambassadors of sustainable tourism for all. She shares her passion and knowledge at G-Guides School for tourist guides. She will turn every learning experience into adventure and will make you change the way you think, behave and act, after you attend her training. The art of tourist guiding is the art of communication on the highest level for her and she will show you how to achieve it.

Aivar Ruukel – Board member of the Estonian Nature Tourism Association.

Aivar Ruukel is the owner-operator of SOOMAA.COM /an ecotour operator in Soomaa National Park since 1994, and the Chairman of the Estonian Ecotourism Society (ESTECAS). Aivar is a winner of the Best Promoter of Tourism in 1997 by the Estonian Association of Travel Agents, and recently recognized by the Estonian Hotel and Restaurant Association as “Best in 2007”.

Marcus Bauer – Co-founder respontour – Responsible Tourism Communication, travel writer and tourism consultant.

Marcus Bauer is a travel writer and tourism consultant, based in the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve in Saarland, Germany. Besides his work as a lecturer for International Tourism Management, Communication and Social Media at Saarland Business School, the University of Applied Sciences in Saarbrücken, he intensively travels to destinations worldwide and publishes about his travel experiences in various national magazines, newspapers and via social media.

Jeppe Klockareson – Owner & Founder at Fair Travel – Responsible Tourism Representation.

Jeppe has worked in tourism for over ten years with focus on ecotourism and responsible tourism. He is the former Managing Director of Basecamp Explorer Sweden, and left the company in 2008 to become the Product Manager of STA Travel Nordic. He’s a member of the board of the Swedish Ecotourism Society and in 2015 he was elected Chairman of the Steering Committee for Sustainable Tourism Management.

Michael Meyer – Co- Founder of OETE

Coming from the tourism sector, he first worked in the hotel industry and later as a tour guide and product developer for Wikinger Reisen GmbH in Canada, Italy, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Georgia. Michael helped to establish the branch office and network of the European Centre for Eco-Agro Tourism (ECEAT) in Germany supporting eco-farmers in developing and marketing offers on Holidays on Farms.

Early in his career he realised that it is important making an effort to influence policy makers to put the right frameworks on sustainable tourism. Together with the NGO Ecological Tourism in Europe (ETE), he contributed to the drafting, negotiating and finally adopting of the International Guidelines for Biodiversity and Tourism Development for the Convention on Biological Diversity with its 192 member states

Kirsi Hyvaerinen Managing Director at PRÁTTO Consulting d.o.o., Partner ITB Advisory, Board Member at Global Ecotourism Network

Kirsi Hyvaerinen has been leading and consulting on change processes in travel and tourism since the mid-90s. She focuses on sustainable development in destinations, capacity building, organizational change, product diversification, branding and marketing. After working with Montenegro´s National Tourism Organisation and its partners 2006-2013, she continues as consultant and educator in the intersection of governments, destination management organisations, tourism SME and NGOs in emerging and developed destinations. In the past two years transnational co-operation projects, adventure travel and work with protected areas have kept her busy. Of Finnish origin, Kirsi loves the great outdoors. She holds a degree in Tourism Management and Marketing from Heilbronn University, Germany.

Andrei Blumer – President of the Association of Ecotourism in Romania (AER)

Andrei Blumer worked as an ecotourism officer in one of the largest conservation project in Central and Eastern Europe: Carpathian Large Carnivore Project (1999 – 2003). He is one of the founders and the current president of the Association of Ecotourism in Romania (AER) since 2003. He gained extensive practical experience in the field of ecotourism, assisting for more than 15 years protected areas, small scale businesses in tourism and ecotourism destinations.

Marta Mills – Stakeholder Engagement and Communications Director, TransCaucasian Trail Association (TCTA).

Marta leads stakeholder and community engagement efforts for the TransCaucasian Trail (TCT) project that contributes to the development of sustainable tourism in the Caucasus region. She has many years of experience in communications and stakeholder engagement, including five years at the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID), working on poverty reduction programs in South Caucasus, Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

Lennart Pittja

Lennart Pittja is an indigenous Sámi from the northern reaches of Sweden, and has been working with Sami tourism for more than 20 years – both as an entrepreneur and a frontrunner in development of Sami tourism. He is the founder of Vägvisaren, Pathfinder Lapland, a family company that works close with nature and is proud of its origin and history. Sápmi Nature is owned and operated by Lennart Pittja from the Unna Tjerusj Sami community in Gällivare. Lennart also serves as the project manager for VisitSápmi – an organization that promotes sustainable travel through the Sápmi region (commonly known as Lapland – the Scandinavian regions of Norway, Finland, and Sweden). He is a foundation member of the WINTA Leadership Council. Lennart has many awards from his former company Vägvisaren-samiska upplevelser/Pathfinderlapland and now he takes the next step by developing and launching Sápmi nature.

Vicky is a sustainable tourism expert. She’s a Masters-published academic with high integrity, business instinct, marketing creativity, and a passion for wildlife, wilderness and adventure. Victoria Smith is the founder of Earth Changers, a webservice helping to find and book real sustainable tourism experiences where the travel has a positive impact on the people in the chosen destination and do not harm the environment.

In 1988 at the conference “Tourism and Environment in Europe” ECOTRANS was started as an initiative of Gordon Sillence. In 1993 ECOTRANS was founded as a European network of experts and organisations involved in tourism, environment and regional development who seek to promote good practice in the field of sustainable tourism. The Mission is to establish and promote clear principles, strategies and examples of good practice for sustainable tourism development in Europe.

Herbert Hamele – President of the European Network for Sustainable Tourism Development ECOTRANS

Herbert Hamele has been working more than 30 years in the field of sustainable tourism and regional development in Europe. In 1993 he founded and since then chairs the European network for sustainable tourism development ECOTRANS as a not-for-profit NGO. Beside participating in European research and development projects with a focus on sustainable tourism certification, he is managing the global Knowledge Networking Portal for Sustainable & Responsible Tourism and its DestiNet Services registered as a “Partnership for SDGs”.
